Beginner's guide to yoni steaming—An ancient ritual for womb wellness
A few years ago, when I was walking my own path back to my body and healing my womb, yoni steaming (or vaginal steaming) became a powerful ally. It showed me I could create sacred space at home, find slowness in the midst of a busy life, and little by little, learn to ritualise the mundane. This ancient practice helped me return to myself and I grew to love it deeply. It was one of my first steps toward genuine feminine reconnection.
Yoni steaming is an ancient earth-honouring practice that invites you into deeper connection with your body, your womb, and the natural world. Using the gentle medicine of warm water and plant allies, this ritual supports physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.
Benefits of yoni steaming
Supports menstrual health, reducing cramps, irregular cycles, and stagnation
Aids in cleansing the womb after menstruation or childbirth
Promotes circulation, relaxation, and awareness in the pelvic area and pelvic floor
Helps release emotional blockages and stored trauma
Cultivates sacred self-care and connection to your feminine essence
What you need
Your chosen herbs
A pot to boil water
A heat source (stove or burner)
A vessel for the steam: choose ceramic or glass, and avoid plastic or metal
A sacred space where you will feel safe, calm, and uninterrupted. You may also like to set up a womb altar to deepen the ritual.
A bathroom mat as a base, pillows for support
Towels, a blanket, or a gown to wrap around yourself
The process, step by step
1. Choose your herb ally
Each herb carries its own energy and benefits. Some common choices include:
Mugwort — cleanses and enhances intuition.
Rose petals — softens emotions and invites self-love.
Chamomile — calms the nervous system.
Dry camomile
You can use a pre-made yoni steaming blend or create your own with dried herbs.
2. Prepare the steam
Bring 2–3 cups of water to the boil in a pot
Just before it reaches a full boil, add a handful of your chosen herbs
Let them simmer for 5–10 minutes to release their medicinal properties
Put the lid on to keep the medicinal properties in
Turn off the heat and allow it to cool slightly—the steam should feel warm, not burning
Never steam with anything plastic as hormone-disrupting toxins can be released
3. Create a sacred space
Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won't be disturbed
Set an intention, whether for physical healing, emotional release, or self-love
Light candles, play soothing music, or sit in meditation for a few moments
4. Position yourself for the steam
Wear a long skirt, robe, or blanket to trap the steam
Sit on a stool with a hole in the centre if you have access to one, or kneel over a bowl of warm herbal water. You can also choose a deep squatting yoga posture if that feels comfortable—Malasana works well
Test the steam before sitting down—do not get burnt
Relax and allow the steam to rise, breathing deeply for 10–20 minutes
Once done, return the herbs and water to the earth in a pot plant or garden or flush down the toilet if you have no access to soil
It is not recommended to exceed 30-minute steam sessions.
5. Aftercare & integration
Rest for a little while after steaming
Drink warm herbal tea and stay hydrated
Journal, meditate, or simply tune into how your body feels
When to steam and when to avoid it
✓ Best times to steam:
Before or after menstruation
Postpartum
When feeling emotionally stagnant or disconnected
✗ Avoid steaming:
During menstruation
During pregnancy
If you are trying to conceive
If you have an active infection
A gentle reminder
Yoni steaming is a ritual of self-love, not just a physical practice. Treat it as a moment of deep connection with your body, your cycles, and your inner wisdom.
